The venue
Spain
The host-country for the 33rd America’s Cup competition is the world’s second most visited destination. Among other things, for its attractive combination of pleasant climate, excellent beaches, and comprehensive leisure and cultural options, along with a modern, quality infrastructure.
There have been four Spanish challengers (1992, 1995, 1999 and 2007). Rolf Vrolijk, the Alinghi chief designer, also designed the Bravo España boat in Auckland in 1999.
Spain is committed to sport. Each year the country hosts numerous first-class sporting events. The America’s Cup is one of them, but the list includes the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, World Championships in a range of disciplines (football, basketball, skiing, athletics, cycling…), competitions such as golf’s Ryder Cup, the final stages of European championships, annual motorcycle Grand Prix and Formula 1 events including the Valencia Grand Prix since 2008.
