To punctuate the inauguration of the 33rd America’s Cup, there was a typical local display of pyrotechnics, just as are famous around Valencia, Mascletá. The rhythmic detonation of the giant firecrackers proved a spectacular sound track to the early afternoon festivities.
The rhythm and power of detonation in a sharp sequence creates a unique experience for the ears. Organised by Vincent Caballer, expert in the field, this Mascletá was, appropriately, one of the biggest and loudest ever, even as measured by the amount of gunpowder used.
So the curtain was raised in style, with considerable noise and excitement, as witnessed by the huge smiles on the faces of the tens of thousands of Valencians and visitors who turned out, of all ages and generations.
And while many simply enjoyed the festive atmosphere and the fire-crackers, others took the opportunity to meet and have autographs signed with the members of the Alinghi and BMW ORACLE Racing teams who were present.
