La Dolce Vita in Valencia

When you left home this morning you were greeted again by grey skies and a biting wind, your umbrella packed just in case. You walk hunched against the chill, beads of sweat forming inside the many layers of clothing. Clearly you are not in Valencia, host city of the America’s Cup for the second successive time.

Here, there are spectacular sunrises. A dawn run along the Las Arenas and Cabanyal, city beaches’ fantastic long promenade is rewarded with a radiant red sunrise way out to where the race course areas will be. Breakfast can be taken outside on a quiet terrace. Already at eight in the morning the skies are blue and sunglasses are useful if not essential. Another lovely day.

Early morning is a time to make plans, for the day and beyond. Where to lunch or maybe even where to hop to for a weekend. Valencia is well served by air, with many European capitals only two hours by plane.

Planning a surprise in Valencia is not hard either. Take your daughter on a surprise trip to Europe’s largest aquarium, the Oceanographical Museum. You can even spend the night at the museum there, in the company of sharks.

If it is March it’s Las Fallas time. Massive papier-mâché ninot figures on street corners, as much as six or seven metres tall. Many are caricatures of political figures, celebrities, film stars, or from the colourful imagination. It is a festival of bonfires and fireworks like no other, going on long into the nights. Don’t hope to sleep!
Or organize tickets for the opera Carmen in the Palace of Arts, a surprise wedding anniversary present?

Maybe it’s time to head to the bakery for fartoms, long sugar powdered pastries which wonderfully complement orange-juice?

It’s a remarkable city Valencia.
